NPFL Fines Shooting Stars N5m, Closes Stadium to Fans Over Crowd Violence
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed a fine of N5 million on Shooting Stars following incidents of crowd violence during their match against Ikorodu City on April 6, 2025. The league body has also ordered that Shooting Stars' home matches at Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, be played without fans in attendance.
The decision follows an investigation into an attack on Ikorodu City players by Shooting Stars supporters after the match. The Oluyole Warriors’ fans held the Ikorodu City players hostage and caused significant damage to their team bus. The club was found guilty of three key charges: failure to provide adequate security, failure to ensure the proper conduct of supporters, and the throwing of objects onto the field of play.
As a result, the NPFL has cited a breach of Rule C9 of the Framework and Rules of the league. The charges state that Shooting Stars failed to control their supporters, leading to the assault on the away team. The club has been given 48 hours to either accept the ruling or appeal the decision.
The NPFL’s ruling is a strong message to clubs about the importance of ensuring safety and security during matches. This fine and stadium closure are intended to serve as a deterrent to other clubs, emphasizing the need for better crowd management and discipline.
Fans of Shooting Stars will be disappointed by the ruling, but the club will be hoping to resolve the issue and return to action soon with a more secure environment for all parties involved.
