Serena Williams Criticizes Disparities in Doping Punishments After Sinner's Ban

Serena Williams has expressed strong views on the controversial doping case involving world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, suggesting that had she been in his position, she would have received a 20-year ban. Sinner, who is set to return to action at the Italian Open next month, was banned for three months after testing positive for clostebol, an anabolic steroid, in March 2024.

He explained that the substance entered his system after a massage in which his physio used an over-the-counter spray to treat a cut on his finger.

Initially, Sinner was not given a ban by the Tennis Integrity Agency, but following an appeal from WADA, a settlement was reached in February, resulting in his three-month suspension. Williams, in an interview with Time Magazine, shared her thoughts on the matter, stating, “Fantastic personality. I love the guy, I love his game. He’s great for the sport.

Men’s tennis needs him.” However, she also pointed out the disparity in how doping cases are handled, noting that if she had been in Sinner's situation, “I would have gotten 20 years. Let’s be honest. I would have had Grand Slams taken away from me.”

Williams emphasized that her intention was not to bring anyone down, highlighting her own experiences of being unfairly criticized throughout her career. Despite the controversy surrounding Sinner’s case, she praised his resilience and contribution to the sport.
