Leverkusen CEO Says Alonso’s Future With Club Hangs in the Balance
Bayer Leverkusen CEO, Fernando Carro, has revealed that the chances of manager Xabi Alonso staying at the Bundesliga side are “50-50,” amid increasing speculation linking the Spaniard with a move to Real Madrid.
Speaking on Monday ahead of the Laureus Sports Awards, Carro acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Alonso’s future but stressed that the club shares a strong relationship with the coach. He disclosed there is a “gentleman’s agreement” in place that would allow Alonso to leave for a club he once played for, such as Real Madrid, under agreed terms.
Alonso, who led Leverkusen to a historic unbeaten league and cup double last season, has been widely praised for his tactical brilliance and leadership. However, with current Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti reportedly nearing the end of his tenure, speculation about Alonso’s return to the Spanish giants has intensified.
“My gut feeling is that it’s 50-50,” Carro told reporters. “Xabi has no exit clause, but if a team he played for comes calling, we would sit and talk. We wouldn’t block him.”
Despite recent setbacks — including exits from the Champions League and German Cup Leverkusen is still poised to finish the season with their second-best points tally in club history. Carro added that clarity is needed within the next month as the club plans for the upcoming season.
He also expressed confidence that key midfielder Florian Wirtz, 21, would remain at the club despite transfer interest, noting his contract runs until 2027.
