32nd Lagos State University Student Executives (LASUSU): VC Urges Students' Union To Partner With The University Management

The Vice-chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has urged the students' union leaders of the school to work in synergy with the university management to protect the rights and welfare of students of the institution.

The VC made this disclosure during the inauguration ceremony of the 32nd Lagos State University Student Executives led by Comrade Adelakun Adeoye Moses, and the Students Parliamentary Council (SPC), led by Rt. Hon. Opemipo Bamgbopa.

The inauguration ceremony was held at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, main campus, Ojo, on Monday, 27th June 2022.

The professor of Physiology, while congratulating the student leaders on their assumption of office, urged them to immediately get to work to ensure the fulfillment of their campaign promises to the students, as time is not on their side.

In her words, "I congratulate the newly sworn-in president and the honorable speaker of the Students Parliamentary Council on your swearing-in to the office today. The responsibilities you are taking up today are enormous; the expectations are huge. Nonetheless, they are not insurmountable. Indeed your overwhelming success in the election demonstrates the trust of our world-class students in your ability to lead and represent them well....I urge you to partner with the university management to ensure that the rights of our students are protected at all times. I also urge you to exhibit maturity, patience, and level-headedness in all situations, even when things don't go your way."

While speaking, the new LASUSU president, Comrade Adelakun Adeoye, in his inaugural address, shortly after he was sworn in by the Chief Justice of the Students Judicial Council, Adejuwon Daniel, said his administration would consolidate on the successes of the previous administration to achieve results: "By provision of our constitution, I assure all that our Union shall listen and be responsive to every legitimate demand of students. In pursuing our demands before the management and the government, LASUSU under my leadership shall be logical, reasonable, and considerate, and ensure to conform with the most ideal way of operating in a civilized union like ours.

"The existing relationship between the Union and the University management shall be strengthened for the overall benefit of LASUites," he was quoted saying.

Earlier in his address, the Acting Dean, Students Affairs Division, Dr. Tajudeen Olumoko, urged the student leaders to forge paths worthy of emulation and avoid being used as political thugs during the election season. He also assured them that the university administration would give them all the necessary support to achieve their vision and goals.

Highpoints of the highly eventful ceremony were the handover of the instruments of office to the new president and the speaker by the out-gone president and speaker, Com. Uthman Badmus and Rt. Hon. Mustapha Adejuwon, respectively.

The event was attended by the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Education, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, who was well represented by the Special Adviser on Tertiary Education, Mr. Omotayo Sanyaolu, and members of the university management, as well as deans, directors and other officials of the university. Parents, students, and other members of the university community were also in attendance.
