Supreme Court Announces Date To Hear Rivers Governorship Case

By Damilare Adeleye

The Supreme Court has fixed next year January 15th to hear the petition of Patrick Tonye-Cole, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State in the 2023 general elections, against Governor Siminalayi Fubara of the Peoples Democratic Party.

It was learnt that part of the prayers of Tonye-Cole is that the court should sack Fubara as governor for failing to resign as Accountant General of the state after emerging as the candidate of PDP in the last election.

Tonye-Cole has also argued that Fubara was not qualified to contest the last election, let alone be declared the winner of the election.

On another ground, the APC governorship candidate is asking the court to cancel elections in some local government areas over allegations of irregularities or he should be declared the winner of the election.

Tonye-Cole‘s suit was dismissed at the tribunal for lacking merit in all the grounds but won some of the grounds at the Court of Appeal court before proceeding to the Supreme Court.
