Police, Obi sensitize tricycle operators, others against blocking public roads

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), B-Division, Awka, Anambra State, Mr Emeka Obi, Wednesday, embarked on sensitization campaign geared towards eradicating road obstructions along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway by Aroma junction, Awka.

Obi, who was joined in the campaign by a concerned resident of Awka and Coordinator, Recover Nigeria Project, Comrade Osita Obi, adviced passengers, bus drivers, shuttle drivers, tricycle operators, taxi drivers, private commuters, and others to make use of government designated parks and bus stops to avoid causing traffic gridlock at Aroma.

He particularly warned Keke drivers (tricycle operators) and shuttle bus drivers to refrain from obstructing movement in the junction while searching for passengers, as the police would not hesitate to arrest and prosecute them accordingly.

The DPO, who later released all the tricycle and shuttle buses recently impounded for violating the traffic law, explained that they would henceforth station enforcement officers to ensure that road users obey laws and orders or face the consequences.

Also speaking, the Coordinator, Recover Nigeria Project, Comrade Osita Obi, noted that parking along the road impact negatively on people lives, including the socioeconomic activities of Awka and government house.

According to Comrade Obi, many could die in the process or sustain injuries in the events of road accidents or breakdown of vehicles due to congestion.

He also warned that he would not be available to assist any law breaker in recovering their vehicles if impounded but would rather support law enforcement agents to prosecute them to latter.

Aroma junction, which is a major expressway leading travellers to Enugu, Onitsha and surrounding environs, equally connects the temporary site of Anambra State government house, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), including the federal and State ministries, departments and agencies.

Aroma junction also leads to many markets, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, the new three arms zone comprising the new permanent site of Anambra State government house, Federal and State government Secretariats, banks and business establishments.

Others are Anambra State judiciary, State and federal High Courts, State House of Assembly, Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Ezeemo International Press Centres (Press Centre), hotels, to mention a few.
