Onana's Mistakes Hand Lyon Last-Gasp Draw in Europa League Quarter-Final

Manchester United's UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie with Olympique Lyonnais remains delicately poised after a dramatic 2-2 draw in the first leg at Groupama Stadium on Thursday. The game saw a series of mistakes from United goalkeeper Andre Onana, whose errors contributed to both of Lyon's goals, leaving the tie in the balance heading into the second leg at Old Trafford.

The match began with Lyon taking the lead in the 25th minute through a free-kick by Thiago Almada, which Onana failed to deal with. The ball bounced just before reaching him and skidded through his hands, allowing Almada’s delivery to find the net. United equalized in the dying seconds of the first half, as Leny Yoro reacted to a Manuel Ugarte volley, redirecting the ball into the bottom corner.

In the 88th minute, United seemed to have secured the win when substitute Joshua Zirkzee scored with a header from Bruno Fernandes' cross. However, Lyon had the last word, as Onana spilled a shot from Georges Mikautadze, allowing Rayan Cherki to tap in the rebound in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

The result put Onana under intense scrutiny, especially after Lyon substitute Nemanja Matic labeled him "one of the worst keepers" in Manchester United history following his earlier comments suggesting United were “way better” than Lyon. Onana's performance added to his growing list of errors leading to goals, with this being his ninth such mistake since last season, the most by any Premier League goalkeeper.

The second leg will be crucial for United, who now face Lyon at Old Trafford next Thursday, where they will hope to avoid further mistakes and progress to the semi-finals.
