Alan Shearer Labels Manchester United's Rasmus Højlund a ‘Damaged Player’

Newcastle United legend, Alan Shearer, has criticized Manchester United striker Rasmus Højlund, describing him as a “damaged player” following the club’s recent 1-0 loss to Wolves in the Premier League.

Shearer shared his blunt assessment during a segment on Match of the Day 2, pointing out that the 22-year-old Danish forward appears unprepared for the weight of leading the attack at a club as demanding as Manchester United.

“I’m looking at a damaged player in Højlund,” Shearer said. “I think he wasn’t ready and isn’t ready to lead the line at a club like Manchester United. Three Premier League goals, and at the minute I’m seeing a player that doesn’t really want to get in there.”

Since joining United from Serie A side Atalanta, Højlund has struggled to meet expectations. While he has managed five goals in the Europa League, his domestic league form has been underwhelming, with only three goals so far this season.

Shearer’s comments come at a time when United is under intense scrutiny for its poor attacking performances and lack of consistency in the Premier League. Højlund, brought in to solve the club’s striker issues, now faces mounting pressure as fans and pundits question his development and suitability for the role.

Despite his young age and flashes of potential, Shearer’s remarks reflect growing concerns that the striker may be facing confidence and form issues that could hinder his growth if not properly addressed.

As Manchester United looks ahead to rebuilding its squad, Højlund’s future and role in the team remain subjects of debate.
